Canalside Road / Canal Build Updates

Works on a major new piece of infrastructure in Wichelstowe commenced in late 2025. The works include:

  • Replacement of the current temporary construction haul route with a new section of highway
  • The construction of a new road bridge over the canal
  • Extension of the canal south from its current position adjacent to Jenkins House, under the road and into housing Parcel 13 before turning to the east and stopping just short of Mill Lane
  • Construction of a new pedestrian swing bridge over the canal

Works being built by contractor Fox(Owmby) Ltd on behalf of the Wichelstowe Joint Venture between Swindon Borough Council and Barratt Redrow.

On this page we will post monthly update on progress over the previous months and provide a look ahead to the works which will be taking place over the next month.

PROGRESS UPDATE April / May 26

  • Excavation of the east / west canal profile where the canal has soft banks. Material generated added to noise bund.
  • Preparation of the concrete base for the pedestrian swing bridge which is being manufactured off-site
  • Completion of several of the concrete culvert walls which form the canal crossing under the road bridge
  • Highway drainage to the east of the bridge nearing completion
  • Dust protection measures implemented to minimise impact on adjacent properties during the warmer months

LOOK AHEAD – Next Month

  • Install and secure the highway bridge beams which will form the span above the canal
  • Commence trimming the canal profile and placement, conditioning and compaction of the clay liner
  • Continue construction of the canal capping beam and the concrete culvert walls
  • Placement of Type 1 material to the carriageway east of the bridge forming the next layer of the highway
  • Commence excavation of the road to the west of the bridge and the junction with Peglars Way
