Repair works planned to the Wilts and Berks Canal

Contractor Alun Griffiths will repair an aqueduct on behalf of the Council at the intersection of the River Ray and the Wilts and Berks Canal in Wichelstowe next month.

The aqueduct at Mill Lane, which was subject to emergency sinkhole repairs in 2024, was originally constructed in the 19th Century and now requires substantial reinforcement to its headwalls to minimise the risks of future failures.

Work is expected to take six to seven weeks, starting from Tuesday, 7 April. No closures are currently planned for the work but the towpath running alongside the canal (between Beavans Bridge and the Old Town Railway Path bridge) may be closed. If that happens, diversions will be in place and clearly signposted. We’d like to thank residents in the area for their patience while the work takes place and to Wilts & Berks Canal Trust for their support.
