Mayor of Swindon celebrates build starting on new retirement community

Donning a hard hat, the Mayor of Swindon, Councillor Imtiyaz Shaikh, recently took part in a ceremony to kickstart construction work on a retirement community coming soon to Peglars Way, Wichelstowe.

The Retirement Living development by McCarthy Stone will help to meet the housing need for retirees in the local area whilst freeing up other properties  as they downsize in the process, giving first time buyers and families a better chance of getting on the property ladder.

Councillor Imtiyaz Shaikh joined Senior Site Manager, Gareth Lewis to address the role McCarthy Stone will play in helping to improve the quality of choice of retirement living in Wichelstowe. He also discussed development plans before putting a spade in the ground and laying one of the first bricks.

Once complete, the Retirement Living development will offer a selection of one and two-bedroom retirement apartments specifically designed to meet the needs of the over 60s, along with communal lounge and garden spaces for socialising. Those eager to secure their dream home can do so when the properties become available to buy off-plan from Spring 2025 while first occupants are expected in Summer 2025.

Councillor Imtiyaz Shaikh said: “There is an urgent need for more specialist retirement homes not just in Wichelstowe but across the region and up and down the country. Developers, such as McCarthy Stone, have an important role to play in meeting that burgeoning demand and ensuring people can continue to live independently in later life. This is an incredibly exciting time for Wichelstowe and I look forward to watching the development’s progress.”

Verity McKay, Divisional Marketing Manager for McCarthy Stone, added: “It was a pleasure to welcome Councillor Imtiyaz Shaikh to our brand-new site in Wichelstowe. McCarthy Stone recognises the shortfall of suitable housing specifically for older people and is therefore committed to designing flexible homes which allow people to make the most of their retirement years. We’re excited to share more details about our development and the vibrant lifestyle that comes with it.”

The development, which, when complete, will feature 44 one and two-bedroom apartments, all in an enviable location next to the picturesque Wilts and Berks Canal, with many homeowners being able to relax with views over the water.  These stylish apartments are conveniently situated close to all the amenities of this beautifully designed residential area, including a Waitrose, Hall and Woodhouse pub and many other shops and restaurants nearby. Close to the wildlife haven of the Wilts and Berks Canal, it benefits from over 200 acres of open space and over 12 kilometres of walkways and cycle paths.

More than nine out of 10 customers would recommend McCarthy Stone to a friend, ensuring it has received the full Five Star award for customer satisfaction from the Home Builders Federation. McCarthy Stone is the only UK housebuilder of any size or type to achieve this rating every year we have taken part in the survey.
